Zion History & Links
The Zion-Mount Carmel Highway connects the southern park entrance in Springdale to the
east entrance in Mt. Carmel. What is most fascinating about the highway is its construction
history and path. It was tunneled through the mountain in less than three years in the late
1920's! Work on what is now known as the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway commenced in 1927
and was completed in 1930. It greatly increased the traffic from Springdale to Mount Carmel
and also had a very positive impact on tourism.
